Question 1 :

POWER BUDGET MISSION

Can the Rover Complete the Mission and Get Back Safely?

Role: Junior Power Engineer

Mission

The rover starts with a 19 Wh battery.

It must travel to an underground site, complete a visual inspection and return to Base with at least 5 Wh remaining

POWER BASICS

Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A)

Energy Used (Wh) = Power (W) × Time (hours)

W tells us how quickly a device uses energy.

Wh tells us how much energy it uses over time.

20 min = ⅓ hour | 15 min = ¼ hour | 10 min = ⅙ hour

THE ROUTE

1 — SUNLIT TRAVEL · 20 min

The rover travels from Base to the tunnel.

Motor needed

2 — DARK TUNNEL · 10 min

The rover moves through the tunnel while the operator uses the camera to steer. Since the tunnel is completely dark, the LED Light must be ON.

Motor + Camera + LED needed

3 — DARK INSPECTION · 10 min

The rover stops to record the damaged equipment. A clear recording is required for the full 10 minutes.

Camera + LED needed

4 — SUNLIT RETURN · 20 min

The rover drives back to Base.

Motor needed

THE CHALLENGE

Each program completes the same route, but the devices are managed slightly differently.

Which program completes the inspection and returns to Base with at least 5 Wh of energy remaining?

Question 2 :

POWER BUDGET MISSION

Which Power Plan Can Bring the Rover Home?

Role: Power Systems Engineer

Mission

The rover must reach an underground site, inspect damaged equipment, send the inspection data to Base and return safely.

Starting Battery: 22 Wh

Required Reserve: 7 Wh

POWER BASICS

Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A)

Energy Used (Wh) = Power (W) × Time (hours)

25 min = ⁵⁄₁₂ hour | 20 min = ⅓ hour | 10 min = ⅙ hour

ROVER SYSTEMS

TWO DRIVE MODES

NORMAL

Higher power consumption and faster travel.

20 min per open-route journey

SAVER

Lower power consumption and slower travel.

25 min per open-route journey

Important: The rocky tunnel requires Normal Mode because the rover needs full motor torque to cross the uneven ground.

THE ROUTE

1 — OPEN ROUTE

Travel from Base to the tunnel.

Normal: 20 min

or

Saver: 25 min

2 — DARK ROCKY TUNNEL · 10 min

The rover moves through the tunnel while the operator steers using the live camera feed.

Normal Motor + Camera + LED

3 — DARK INSPECTION · 10 min

The rover stops to record the damaged equipment. Both the Camera and LED Light must work for the full 10 minutes.

4 — SEND REPORT · 10 min

The rover sends the recorded data to Base.

Radio

5 — RETURN TO BASE

Choose Normal Mode or Saver Mode for the return journey.

THE CHALLENGE

The four programs use the rover's power differently.

Which program completes every task and returns to Base with at least 7 Wh of energy remaining?

Select an option below:

a.
Option 1
b.
Option 2
c.
Option 3
d.
Option 4
